Hamilton lake summer trail to carnervon south shoulder today. - 11 degrees celcius at the trial in the am around 9 0 or just above when we got back at 3. Trail and slopes were solid mfcr up until the lake, as things got steeper by around 11am crusts had started to break down slightly, some shaded pockets containing no crusts at all. Very wind affected at tree line and above On all aspects. We skinned up the south shoulder dropped the skis at a large cornice and went for a boot pack up the ridge to see what we would encounter in the alpine. Found cornices with very large moats some have seperate from the ridge and are hanging on by threads. Others are portable size and seem to be very locked onto the ridge for the time bieng. We headed for the summit block. Stopped short 250m below the summit, steep exposed commiting snow climbing on hard thick wind slabs above open air and facets sent us back the other way for taking a ride here or having the rug pulled out would be fatal in this terrain.... This was on a roughly due south aspect on lookers left shoulder to gain around the first rock band on the left hand side.
Snow textures are extremely variable. Almost everything was hit by wind and everything solar has mfcrs. It's pretty spring out there below tree line skiing after 1pm is pretty rough and sticky. Early starts and early finish is the way to be unless things become more winter like for abit. The winds up high made things for a very wintery and fresh feel with full face masks while booting and climbing up. The weather came in slightly later then the forecast had suggested. Clouds rolled in around 2 with no precip at that time. Remained very sunny through the day and early-mid afternoon
