Avalanche conditions

• Slab avalanches today or yesterday.

Spent March 7-9th at Phelix Creek, based out of the cabin. Overall excellent skiing, with 30-40 cm of low density snow. On the 7th we noticed a size 1.5 on the Peregrine-Frodo col (North aspect, 2200 m) which initiated on the rocky ridge and propagated across (see photo). Likely released on the surface hoar at around 40 cm deep, following the snow storm on Thursday night.

Multiple hand pits and two quick ECTs on the same aspect showed the storm slab was resistant planar at around 20-30 cm. A deeper layer was found at around 40 cm, which propagated partly. Snow depth in the area was near 350 cm on this aspect. Temperatures throughout the weekend were cold, with probably a maximum around -5 and mins around -20C. We kept to conservative terrain for the most part.

We mostly skied North aspects, which had great snow. Solar aspects were getting heavier by Monday 9th but skied very well. No signs of instability other than some sluff on the steeper slopes. South aspects on the slopes adjacent to the lake by the cabin had all gone by Monday. Solar aspects were getting heavier by Monday, but North aspects (particularly Cabin Hill) skied very well.
