Comments
Went for Forever Young Couloir accessed from the Illecillewaet Glacier. Sunny cold day (-14C) with VF @ 1800m in some parts of the park.
.
UP: 10-30cm of HST at TL and BTL. Localized cracking of storm slab on unsupported features (pillows) on SH. In the alpine, katabatic winds have formed 5-15cm reactive wind slabs on lee features on the moraines leading up to the glacial toe. Propagation limited to 1-2m. 5-15cm of snow on the Ille Glacier sitting on a firm base. Dug a test profile at the top of couloir. HS @ 2650m: 220cm. Aspect: N. 20cm of new F snow on top of a 3mm MF crust-SH combo due to the past inversion. 1F snow below that.
CTM12 (SP) down 20cm on MF-SH layer. No propagation.
.
DOWN: 20cm of powder on top of a firm crust. A little wind-affected in spots. Very fast sluff. No slab releases. Exposed rocks in the couloir. Good powder skiing down low.
