Window mountain was a moody place to be today. Steady ridgetop cloud moving across from the SW hopefully bringing a bit of precip in the coming days! Temperatures were mild, but light SW wind had a chilly bite to it!
Ice conditions from the trailhead were a bit bumpy for the average Olympic speed skater, and even worse for the average mountain sled. We were able to make it up to the Window mountain trail and the conditions improved around 1800 m. Surface conditions are a mix of crust and wind affected snow depending on exposure to sun and wind. The snowpack consists of well settled facets top to bottom. Height of snow averages 150cm at treeline.
We observed no signs of instability on our travels, and were not able to produce any significant results in snow pit tests. We were not able to find any surface hoar growth from the past few days of clear weather. The snowpack in this area is ready to accept more load, fingers crossed Mother Nature is ready to deliver some new snow soon!!
