The Burn on Helen Shoulder

Riding quality was:

• Mellow slopes
• Open trees

We stayed away from:

• Convex slopes
• Steep slopes

The day was:

• Warm

Avalanche conditions

• Whumpfing or drum-like sounds or shooting cracks.

Major whumpfs were felt and heard on the way up on the S to SE faces, especially near tree line and in the open areas like shown in the photo. It was consistent enough that a steep slope felt like it was for sure going to slide.

Moving on to a SW face seemed to change a little bit, as we entered the Burn off Helen shoulder and the snowpack seemed to change enough to ski the mellow slopes there. One other group skied the Burn off the top, staying away from the steeper alpine slope off the skiers right. Great snow high up, dense trees down to the car.
