With new snow, warming temperatures, wind forecasted through the day, and avalanche hazard increasing we made a conservative trip plan to the Corbin area. On route to the Barnes lake area there is a short steep slope that the access road travels through. With recent reports of wind slabs releasing below treeline (BTL) we did some exploring before we continued on. Our initial test pit didn't give us confidence so we left the sleds there and toured up a low angle slope instead. There were no signs of cracking in the storm snow but we wanted to check out the recent wind slab distribution. We dug another profile at 1950m below treeline on an east aspect where we had results down 35cm on a weak layer between two wind slab layers and then another result down 80cm on a sugary facet layer formed earlier in the season. All of these signs kept us to low angle slopes where we enjoyed great powder skiing.
