Beginner here, we dug a pit above the lake to learn, practice and get some more information. After 5 wrist taps we saw the top layer of snow break away as pictured here. We were not planning on going past the lake so we stopped here and went back down the trail.

We could definitely feel the change in the snowpack and deeper it was more solid.
