Mount Field

We ski toured around Mount Field on Thursday Feb 27. Conditions were generally excellent. We skied the south shoulder and another slide path further north. We did not venture above 2300m. There is lots of space for more tracks, especially in the bowl from the summit which hasn’t been touched since it the last reset.

We triggered one small size one avalanche on a wind loaded ridge. The slide was only 10 cm – 20cm deep, 5m wide, and ran for 10m or so. We also noted some cornice failures on the ridge. The cornices are looking large. We did not see any other recent activity.

Temperatures were mild all day with calm winds below ridge top and light winds at ridge top at 2300m. Temperatures stayed below freezing on North and East aspects.

We did observe buried wind slabs on the south shoulder of Mount Field, windier location. They were generally stubbornly resistant in our hand shears. We did not observe any cracking or whoomphing, and we broke trail. HS at 1850m was 285 cm with 40cm PF and 25cm PS. 😊 HS was 225 cm on the south shoulder.

The skiing here is currently suburb! The snow is right side up, light on top, and virtually untouched by the wind.
