Comments
On Friday: surprised to find 15-20 cm of low density snow widespread throughout the drainage. Ski penetration was 30cm in most places offering quality skiing at treeline and small alpine features. Visibility limited is to 1600m and below. We found good stability on the NE and N aspects that were skied. Sled penetration was 35-40cm in the lower meadows.
Wind was no issue here with very minimal evidence of wind at ridge crest (10cm of powder on top) and some cross evidence of recent wind (soft cornices) on N aspects as anticipated.
Of note:
1) no natural avalanches or signs of instability.
2) very thin (1-2mm) rain crust was found 5 cm down
3) wind may have been localized to the southern areas?? (No sure)
4) visibility opened up in the mid afternoon allowing views of the higher peaks in the area, also no visible wind scouring on S aspects, and no signs of avalanches
