Rockies snowpack in Hartley

We stayed away from:

• Steep slopes

Avalanche conditions

• Whumpfing or drum-like sounds or shooting cracks.

Thursday afternoon ..... south aspect ...... facetted (surprisingly dry) shallow rockies-feel snowpack. about 1m at 1700m. Jan 24th raincrust to 1800m, variously blown off / 30 deep depending on the cross-loading

Didn’t dig, but whumfing pretty regularly around 1750 -1850m ..... especially on lower angle areas. Didn’t go (almost) anywhere more than 20, 25deg :-)

Between raincrust, sun crust and tight replanted cut-block trees, the skiing ... er .... wasn’t! Zorro would have been proud :-)

Heard a big rumble approx 4pm (avalanche / cornice drop?) from Mt Bisaro area .... no obs.
