Aemmer

Given the recent report of good conditions in the Aemmer, we went to have a look for ourselves. From the bottom, the surface seemed irregular, indicating that it had effectively been skied recently and had reportedly sloughed abundantly. Roughly 7 cm of fresh snow was covering the old slough debris which were for the most part fairly soft. Moderate NW wind had worked the new snow and turned it into pockets of 5 cm soft slabs except for the very top where a 20 cm 1 finger windslab was present on the right side. The ski quality was overall very good except for the top 30 meters that had previously sloughed down to the very firm leftover snow from last winter in a few places. Skiing that section was quite tricky and a fall would likely have had some nasty consequences. Slough management was also on our minds and rarely could we link more than half a dozen turns without risking being swept down by our own slough. A few soft slabs 5 to 20cm thick were triggered while pulling in safe spots. Noticeably, one 20 cm thick 1 finger 5 m wide windslab was triggered in the lower couloir without consequence. Of note, many sharks were lurking under the 7 cm of fresh snow on the way down to Lake Anette.
