Comments

Dug a pit on a treed slope to base. Depth of snow was HS175. Foot penetration was 73 cm. Lots of fresh powder for transport so watch for wind loading on leeward slopes.

It was only -1.5 and snowpack is starting to settle. Did some compression tests, and had resistant planer fracture down 44 cm after 14 taps. When we tried again it happened after 20 taps on same layer. Did a deep tap test and had resistant planer collapse at 150 cm, just above ice and melt forms that are down to surface. There's an ice layer 75 cm down, 2 cm thick but is well bonded to snow above and below it.

Know before you go, check your riding area before you ride. Check the snow that you're riding in. There is the potential for large slab avalanches up to 44 cm deep.
