I came out from 5 days of skiing above Waddington Hut from Dec 31 to Jan 4. It was generally warmer higher up (inversion), but all NE to NW-facing slopes held excellent snow. We skied many runs in the 30-40 degree range between Jan 2 and Jan 4 with no avalanche involvement. There were occasional sluffs ~10 cm deep on convexities that did not propagate far.

All aspects that see sun in the alpine were developing some melt-freeze crust during the week. Many natural avalanches ran on solar aspects sometime between Dec 31 and Jan 1.

To our surprise, duri9ng the day of January 2 there was high overcast cloud that came in, and in the morning of Jan 3 we observed 2-3 mm surface hoar that grew on all aspects, and up to ridge-tops in the alpine.

On Jan 3 the warm sun came out again in the afternoon and I assume the SH was destroyed on solar aspects, but it remained present on shady aspects — something to keep in mind with the new storm system moving in. I will upload a photo if I get the chance.
