Mountain Weather Forecast

A surface low develops in northern Alberta today and is set to deliver moderate to heavy rain to northeastern BC now into Wednesday morning. Eastern slopes of the North Rockies near Stone Mountain Provincial Park and communities such as Tetsa River, and Sikanni Chief are the likeliest candidates for heavy rainfall. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also possible as far south Mackenzie, Pine Pass, and Tumbler Ridge but will be delayed until tonight and Wednesday. I also wouldn't rule out localized heavy rainfall for lowland communities of the Fort Nelson and Peace regions due to the potential for thunderstorms.

The Alberta low will also generate moderate to strong westerly winds through the central interior and Peace regions Today and Wednesday.

The 500mb animation depicted above shows the previous coastal low bringing rain to the south coast redeveloping over northeastern BC and bringing return flow thereby delivering significant rain today and Wednesday. Due to multiple upper low centres dumb-belling around each other, the south coast and over Smithers will be showery before easing this evening.

On Wednesday, the dominant weather feature will persist over the North Rockies and northeastern BC where lots of rainfall continues and begins its southward extent before reaching the BC-AB by Thursday morning. Ridging over the southern third of the province amplifies Wednesday where fair weather conditions remain. By Thursday afternoon, the ridging will block the decaying lows southward descent with rain easing.
