A Trough Between Two Ridges
A ridge of high pressure will keep the interior ranges and the south coast mostly dry today. However, valley clouds and fog patches with drizzle or freezing drizzle can be expected this morning.
A Pacific front will move onto the northwest ranges today, spreading heavy snow and strong winds to the region. The trailing cold front will move over Vancouver Island to North Rockies by early Saturday morning, spreading flurries or rain showers with light amounts. This front will cross southern B.C. and move to the south late Saturday. The associated low pressure will cross northern B.C. on Saturday with more snow to the northwest ranges and flurries to North Rockies.
A ridge of high pressure will build in the wake of the system on Saturday night, before another Pacific front reaches the northwest Sunday morning.
The 500mb animation shows a rather sharp upper ridge over the province this morning. The ridge will move to the east in the afternoon, followed by an upper trough moving towards the northwest region. The upper trough will cross northern B.C. on Saturday. The second ridge of high pressure rebuilds over the province Saturday night but not for long - another upper trough crossing the northwest and northern B.C. on Sunday will flatten the ridge.
