Atmospheric River Keeps on Flowin'
An atmospheric river continues to bring rain to south coastal BC and portions of the central interior. A series of weak waves along the frontal boundary has stalled the front over Vancouver Island. Heavy rain will continue giving 50 to 100 mm over the next 24 hours, with the highest amounts expected for the North Shore, Howe Sound and over southwestern Vancouver Island. Along with copious rain, the system has brought mild tropical air which lifted freezing levels to near 2500m across southern BC.
Rain also extends into the Columbias, Cariboos and to Prince George. Rainfall amounts here will range from about 10 to 30mm with the highest amounts expected from near Blue River to Barkerville. The front will eventually weaken on Sunday and dissipate on Monday.
In the Yukon, a ridge of high pressure will build and give dry, but cooler than normal conditions.
The animation of 500mb chart shows an upper low west of Haida Gwaii and to its south, a strong southwest flow. This flow is the atmospheric river which is bringing moisture from subtropical Pacific Ocean all the way to BC. A weak surface low (or wave) along the front will keep the front nearly stationary today.
On Sunday, the upper will dig south and reach the Oregon coast, cutting off the moisture towards the South Coast and the front will gradually weaken on Sunday and dissipate on Monday.
Another strong front will approach on Monday but it never quite reaches the coast at full strength. On Tuesday, it becomes negatively tilted (NW-SE orientation), weakens and slows. The remnants don't arrive on the coast until Wednesday.
