Winter in the Rockies
A cold front sliding down the Rockies will bring snow from the North Rockies to the Purcells and all of the Alberta Rockies today. Gusty northerly winds will accompany the front as well as plummeting freezing levels to valley bottom this afternoon and tonight.
Sunny skies and dry conditions return for Monday and continue through to Wednesday. Freezing levels rebound each day next week but will remain below the peak values that were seen yesterday. Some cumulus clouds along ridgetops may start to develop towards Tuesday and Wednesday as the ridge weakens.
Another cold front will enter northeast B.C. on Wednesday, bringing snow to the North Rockies ranges Wednesday and inevitably, sliding down the Rockies once more for Thursday.
An upper ridge that is keeping B.C. and Alberta dry will be squeezed from both sides today with a shortwave upper trough supporting a surface cold front over the Rockies, bringing snow and cooler temperatures to those mountain ranges. Meanwhile, a low in the eastern Pacific will spawn a shortwave trough on Monday and clip Vancouver Island. Despite that, the upper ridge still remains relatively intact through to Tuesday.
However, another upper trough that is supporting a cold front will enter northeast B.C. late on Wednesday, bringing another round of cooler temperatures and snow to the North Rockies.
