A one-two punch of weather systems
A series of systems will impact the province today and through the weekend.
The first system will be bringing snow mainly to the Northwest ranges today and tonight with lighter snow developing over parts of the interior ranges (mainly North Rockies, Cariboos, Columbias).
The second system will arrive early Saturday and will be more powerful than the first. This system will initially impact the Northwest Ranges with heavy snow. Through the day on Saturday and continuing Saturday night, the system will slowly sweep southwards through BC. Along the way, the system will spread moderate snow over many interior ranges (mainly North Rockies, Cariboos, Columbias) and heavy rain/snow over the south coast ranges (South Coast, Sea to Sky, South Coast Inland).
The animation above shows the flow of the upper atmosphere. For today through Saturday, a strong westerly flow (winds parallel to the black lines) will be directing a series of weather systems into BC. The first system will arrive today and the constant feed of moisture from the upper flow will sustain precipitation today through tonight.
The second system will arrive early Saturday with much more moisture being fed into BC by the upper flow. This flow will continue to act as a firehose of moisture directed at BC for Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday. During that period, the flow will advance the moisture southwards and sweep through BC. Mountaintop winds will be strongest along the front where the flow lines (black lines) are the closest to each other.
