A few obs from an AST 1 course Dec 23. We toured out to Miller Ck near the skihill. Alpine is heavily wind affected from recent NW outflows, and there are isolated windslabs in lee features. We saw a few thin windslabs out on steep, south facing terrain above Miller Ck, up to size 1.5. Very minimal propoagation in obvious loaded features. Also noted one cornice fall size 2 with tv sized chunks in debris.
Weather was sunny, light E winds, and inversion temps to -8c. Snowpack depths are variable, and we observed a strong temp gradiant in shallow areas, creating sugary snow. There is small surface hoar growing below treeline, over the recent storm snow, and the Dec 14 raincrust, down 15cm, is evident up to 1550m.
Merry Christmas
