Comments
Great day up Hellroaring with 25-40 cm of new snow sitting over a crust below 1600m and a density change above that. Our test pit at 2100m on a NE aspect at treeline showed a layer of stellar snow crystals buried 30cm deep, the snow above was too soft to react in our tests but it was failing easily and planer when we picked it up with a shovel and tilted it. As we approached the ridgeline we were on high alert for the snow getting stiffer above the stellars, and ended up turning around just below ridge crest to enjoy great skiing and sledding.
