Comments
It took some work today at Groundhog to find riding that was just right. Down low we found temperatures around 0°C resulting in heavy snow with hard crusts just below the surface. Next, we headed to the upper tree line and alpine areas where we found poor visibility and reactive wind slabs. Here we saw a recent avalanche from last nights storm in a north facing bowl. We also had sled cuts pop out wind slabs up to 30cm deep on small slopes. These test slopes are a great way for us to get a feel for the avalanche problem without exposing ourselves to the hazard. Finally, we found untouched powder while weaving through dense forest just below tree line.
