Presenting the 2016 Cora Shea Memorial Fund Winners

Funding awarded to women studying snow science

Congratulations to this year’s winners of the Cora Shea Memorial Fund, Montse Bacardit and Neige Calonne. The Avalanche Canada Foundation established the Cora Shea Memorial Fund to provide financial assistance to women seeking to do avalanche research and/or study towards advanced avalanche practice. Up to two grants of $750 are awarded annually to support women of any nationality in this field.

Montse Bacardit is from Spain where she works as an avalanche forecaster at the Aran Avalanche Centre. Montse plans to use the money to attend the 2016 ISSW (International Snow Science Workshop) in Breckenridge, CO where she will present a paper titled “Human-triggered slab avalanche properties from the Catalan Pyrenees.”

“It's very nice, from time to time, to get a small support and recognition from the avalanche community to go on with my professional career,” said Montse. “Therefore, I am very happy and grateful to be awarded with the grant.”

Neige Calonne is from France and applied for the grant because she was also motivated to attend the 2016 ISSW; she will use the funding to assist with travel expenses. Neige is a researcher in snow physics currently working as a postdoc at the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos, Switzerland. She plans to present at the ISSW on developments of snowpack modelling. “Receiving this funding allows a great opportunity to attend the ISSW to get to know the snow researchers located in America, and that might be interesting for future postdocs or collaborations,” said Neige.

We send our sincere best wishes to Montse and Neige at the ISSW conference this year and for their future work in avalanche research. The application deadline for the next Cora Shea Grant is May 31, 2017. Click here for more information on the grant and submission guidelines.
