Alpine Club of Canada dedicates new hut on the Wapta Icefield

Our Executive Director Gilles Valade was invited to participate in a dedication ceremony for the Alpine Club of Canada’s (ACC) newest addition to their world-famous system of high-elevation huts. The Louise & Richard Guy Hut is situated near the base of Mont des Poilus in Yoho National Park, northwest of Lake Louise, Alberta. This new hut will be a welcome addition to the Wapta Traverse, one of North America’s most famous hut-to-hut ski touring objectives.

“The ACC has been a valued partner for many years and I was very pleased to be able to attend this ceremony in such a beautiful location,” said Valade. “We share many of the same values with the ACC and many of their members are users of our products and services. I was honoured to be a part of this very special event.”

The hut is named after two long-time members of the ACC. Richard Guy, now 98 years old, is a retired professor mathematics who still acts as an advisor to staff and students at the University of Calgary. His wife, Louise Guy, died in 2011 at the age of 92. Richard climbed his last mountain—Ha Ling Peak in Canmore—when he was 96, to take Louise’s ashes to the summit. This remarkable couple were committed and generous members of the ACC for four decades and in 2014, Richard made a significant donation towards the building of this beautiful new high-mountain hut.
