We’re back on the mainland this week! Check out our instagram page avcan_vanisland to see what we are up to!
We had a late start to our day after lovely sailing across the strait. We parked at the pull out just past the Nordic area. Conditions low down below treeline are still terrible, less than meter of hard crust with surface hoar on top made it very slippery.
Around 1150 m, the crust transitioned to dense snow. In the shade, the hard surface snow surface was still dry. In the sun the top 10 cm was moist by 3 pm. Tree bombs were falling all around us, helmets come in handy for conditions like this.
The last storm cycle ended up dumping 60 cm on the north shore. Where we investigated, the new snow is sitting on a 2 cm crust, and starting to bond. We had moderate results in compression tests but could not get to column to propagate in extended test. Widespread shiny surface hoar is widespread to ridge top at the moment.
Skiing was ok in open trees, variable in dense trees.
