Breaking Down the Omega Block

The omega block continues for one more day with dry and sunny conditions across most of the province and territory. Once again, the exception will be along eastern facing slopes of the Rockies along the BC/Alberta border, where a northeasterly upslope flow and lingering instability will produce light precipitation today.

A weather system arriving on Saturday will bring the first bout of precipitation in a while to coastal B.C. while interior B.C will see this on Sunday. The weather system will occlude just before making landfall resulting in little modification of the airmass. Freezing levels will be lower than under the omega block but no large swing in freezing levels expected.

The low pushes across B.C. Saturday night and reappears as a lee low in southern Alberta on Sunday. Strong to extreme are forecast for the Rockies.

A ridge of high pressure returns on Monday bringing in a warmer airmass and rising freezing levels, especially to the southern B.C.

Running through the 500mb loop, the omega block gets pinched today and moves east as an upper low over the northeastern Pacific pushes onshore. An upper trough extending from this upper low elongates and develops an upper low off the northern tip of Vancouver Island by Saturday evening. This upper low then separates from the parent upper low, which remains in the northeast Pacific, and move into Alberta.

An upper ridge builds over B.C. on Monday with dry conditions. There is uncertainty as to the strength of this upper low and this will determine the height of the freezing level moving into the middle of next week.
