First venture of the year into Allan Crk for us. Valley cloud to 1500m where we were greeted with beautiful blue skies and new surface hoar...yay! Skies remained mainly clear all day with no winds although high open alpine terrain showed signs of soft windslabs from previous.
Rain crust exists to 1400m. Quick hand tests at 1500m on sw asp had easy results -20cm on 10mm surface hoar. Ill keep an eye on the elevation band for sure.
Test profile at 2075m on NE asp. 160cm snowpack right side up. Temps at -6 1200hrs. Upper 30cms loose and fluffy on top of a well consolidated mid pack. Nov crust down 100cms and producing hard sudden collapse results in compression tests but no extended column results. New hoar on snow surface although we did not find it deeper down in our profile. We suspect it was blown downslope at this location and we did not investigate further. New surface hoar was widespread above cloud line and over 10mm in sheltered locations.
We saw a few small (sz1) loose dry in steep lee terrain. No other common signs of instability noted throughout our travels.
Good lines on a sunny day.
