We dug near an old crown that released earlier in January. We were on a northwest facing slope at 2000 m, and the snowpack was 145 cm deep. We found surface hoar buried down 80 cm (see photo). We suspect it was the culprit weak layer in the previous avalanche. We stayed conservative with our terrain choices.
