Get outside they said …. You’ll love it they said …….. The snow is awesome they said ……… and they were right !
Fab visibility allowed us to see far and wide, and while we saw surface hoar forming (seemingly) everywhere, we saw no avalanche activity, nor had any signs of instability, nor reactivity to sledding, skiing, or snowpack testing in our pits.
The snowpack where we were was variable in depth from nothing to two metres as a result of previous Moderate winds, with a ‘true’ average of 80 cm in sheltered places. On steeper sun-facing slopes there was a thin sun crust that is already breaking down with faceting, making skiing a little sporty but possible.
The day was beautifully clear and cold (-9 at 2200 m at lunchtime), with a light wind blowing from the south west.
