Obvious clues were not everywhere like our last outing during the storm. We were stomping on gully walls and steep convexities on our way up, but were not getting any shooting cracks or whumpfing. That said, we had the feeling that in the right piece of steep terrain, we could still trigger an avalanche big enough to ruin our day.
We saw lots of evidence of a natural avalanche cycle, but nothing from the last 12 hours. Today’s wind was trying to fill the crowns back in already. Of note, we did see a couple of slabs that were deeper than the rest and appeared to have run on the November crust/weak layer.
We looked in the snow for more info. In a sheltered area at treeline we were still getting some snowpack test results on the pre-storm interface, it helped confirm our intuition that it was still a good day to be conservative. The layers of interest include one down 35 cm - a mix of surface hoar and preserved stellar crystals. We also found an old layer of surface hoar down about 70 cm that seems to be strengthening, but doesn’t have our full confidence. The November crust was down around 90 cm and still has weak faceted crystals above it. So, we made some pow turns on the sled, and skied some more low angle stuff away from overhead hazard. A good day.
