Celebrate winter, learning more about avalanches, and how to stay safe while you enjoy the backcountry.

Numerous organizations, resorts and clubs will celebrate winter and avalanche education through Avalanche Awareness Days. The "official" weekend for Avalanche Awareness Days is January 21-22, 2023, but AAD activities and events can happen all winter long. Check the schedule below to see if there is an event near you.

  • Avalanche Awareness evening, Invermere, Jan. 12 at the Ullr Bar
    Come to the games room at the back of the Ullr Bar, 7 - 9 pm. Local mountain guides and avalanche forecasters will present a quick snowpack synopsis, observations, and SAR updates of the central Purcell Mountain Range. There will be time for Q&A, Schwag bags, raffles and prizes! 
  • Avalanche Awareness Days at Marmot Basin, Jasper, Jan. 21
    Join Marmot Basin Mountain Safety Team for Avalanche Awareness Days! 9 am - 4 pm
    Our safety team will be doing demos and training throughout the day. Be at the top of the Paradise Chair at the times below to take part.
    10:30 and 12:00: Avalanche Transceiver Training
    10:30 and 13:30: Avalanche Education
    13:30: CARDA (Canadian Avalanche rescue Dog team) demo
    13:45: Explosives demo - hopefully with an avalanche!
  • Avalanche Awareness Night, Banff Centre, Banff, AB, Jan. 22
    Learn about avalanche risks associated with backcountry and out-of-bounds travel.

  • Avalanche Awareness Days at Whitewater Ski Resort, Nelson, BC, Jan. 21-23
    Avalanche Awareness Days will be held in conjunction with Whitewater's Winter Festival. There will be activity stations focused on avalanche awareness and safety and a Managing Avalanche Terrain course. Check out the link above for all the great activities through the day.

  • Avalanche Awareness Days with BC Parks, South Coast/Squamish, Jan. 21-22
    BC Parks will conduct events at the Red Heather warming hut, set to entertain, educate and augment your backcountry knowledge.
  • Avalanche Awareness Days with BC Parks, Mt. Seymour, Jan. 21-22
    Are you AVY SAVVY? Test your skills and knowledge at BC Parks’ annual Avalanche Awareness Days on January 21 and 22, 2023 at Brockton backcountry gate near Brockton Point in Mount Seymour Provincial Park. In partnership with Avalanche Canada and North Shore Rescue, you can learn backcountry skills and how to safely travel in avalanche terrain from local park rangers and North Shore Rescue members, practice with avalanche transceivers, and even test your knowledge for the chance to win some prizes.
    When: January 21 and 22, 2023                9:30am-3:30pm each day

  • Avalanche Awareness Days at Fernie Alpine Resort. Jan. 21-22
    Join Fernie snow patrol in a transceiver search and gear auction on the 21st. There will be a CARDA dog demo and snow pit analysis on the 22nd.
  • Avalanche Awareness Day at Mt. Washington, Vancouver Island. Jan. 22, 9 am - 3 pm
    Mount Washington Professional Ski Patrol is partnering with Avalanche Canada to bring Avalanche Awareness Day to Mount Washington.  All ages and abilities can join us out front of the Alpine Lodge and speak to professionals, learning about snow safety in our mountain environment. Bring your own beacon for a beacon basin scavenger hunt below Eagle Chair for awesome prizes; come and meet Rory the local Avalanche Rescue Dog; experience demonstrations from the Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue Team, and more!
  • FREE avalanche refresher day with Mountain Skills Academy and Adventures, Whistler, Jan. 27
    This course will focus on seasonal equipment functionality check, companion rescue steps, fine search mastery (single burial) as well as multiple close burials (marking function). There will be two sessions with a capacity of 10 people each.
  • Jasper in January Street Party: Jan. 28, 6 - 9 pm. Patricia Street, Jasper, AB
    Drop by the Parks Canada outreach table to learn about snow science, winter safety and caribou conservation in Jasper National Park. Parks Canada visitor safety specialists will be on hand and so will the park’s avalauncher (big snow gun) will be on site (operational use permitting).  
  • Avalanche Awareness Day at Apex Mountain Resort, Jan. 28
  • Avalanche Awareness Days at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Jan. 28-29
    Come out for a weekend of fun for the whole family! Practice transceiver searching, watch a CARDA search demo, explosives demo, snow profile demo and other fun events for all ages. We will be in Crystal Bowl all weekend on January 28th & 29th with various events going on.  Look for the Kicking Horse Arch and Tent in Crystal Bowl!
  • Avalanche Awareness Days at Kimberley Alpine Resort, Feb. 5
    In partnership with the Avalanche Canada and the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA), enjoy a day of fun, education, and hands on demonstrations with the Kimberley and Cranbrook Search and Rescue.
    Get informed and drop by the Kimberley Alpine Resort Plaza for Avalanche Awareness Day!
    FREE education and demonstrations including:
    The latest avalanche equipment with Kimberley Search and Rescue and Cranbrook Search and Rescue; Search and rescue demonstration with avalanche dog; Transceiver Education and search games and more!

  • Avalanche Awareness Days at Panorama Mountain Resort, Feb. 9 and Feb. 11
    Thurs. Feb 9, 6:30 pm: Avalanche themed trivia night at the Jackpine pub
    Sat. Feb. 11, 11 am - 2 pm: transceiver plot for practice and race at the base; 12 pm - 2 pm: snow profile at the summit

  • Avalanche Awareness Days at SilverStar Resort, Feb. 11
    Join the SilverStar patrol in the village near the Red Antler Restaurant from 9:00 - 3:00. There will be transceiver practice, shoveling demo and RECCO demo as well as informative visual aids on avalanche problems.
  • Avalanche Awareness Story Night in Jasper, Feb. 13, 6 - 9 pm
    Jasper National Park Visitor Safety and Marmot Basin Safety Operations will present at the Jasper Yellowhead Museum. Prizes, free snacks, cash bar available. Doors open at 6 pm; stories and Q&A 7-9 pm. Admission is free. Donations are recommended with proceeds going to Jasper Crisis Services.
