Today we ventured out to South York to assess the impact of the warming on the snowpack. As we moved through different parts of the terrain, we saw no new avalanches.

As we travelled around the lower elevations, we observed the top 2 cm of the snowpack had become moist. The temperature in the parking lot was +3, and in the below treeline, it was +1. Everywhere else however, was not impacted. The thin, high cloud and moderate wind kept things cool.

Unfortunately, due to the warming and the extended period of high pressure, the access to terrain was quite challenging.

Despite it being the end of January, the trails reminded us of early December conditions. There were a good amount of exposed stumps and rocks, and numerous open water crossings. The small amount of moist snow will make trails icy when it cools overnight.

If you are heading out into the backcountry this weekend be cautious as you move around lower elevations until you get into the deeper snow. It was great to be out in milder temperatures today!
