Its probably a sneaky surface hoar layer, sheltered in the NE pockets.. sneaky as in it is not everywhere, is not triggered naturally and is waiting.
This was a sneaky avalanche, on our way up the dome I saw zero evidence of this weakness. No naturals, no whumffing, nothing. My ski cuts up high produced nothing. Then I was 4 turns down, when I cartwheeled and upon coming back up I had triggered a slide.. what was crazy is that my size 1, propagated and continued to trigger slides. All in it was probably a 2.5
