Guess Who's Back, Back Again, Winter's Back, Tell A Friend
Yes, that's right! Our friend Old Man Winter is back, and boy, let me tell you he's feeling rather ferocious! As we enjoyed (more or less) a couple months of "pleasant", or run-of-the-mill winter weather with the El Nino pattern firmly in place, winter has decided to come back with gusto, so that we don't forget about how snowy and cold it really can get in January!
So, today we start with the h'ors d'ouvre. A weak trough will encroach on the coast and spread light to moderate precipitation to coastal regions today. With freezing levels low enough, near sea level wet snowfall accumulations are possible. On today's system's heels comes a robust system for this evening and overnight. That will bring heavy precipitation and extreme winds to many coastal ranges and will even push into the interior.
And let's not forget about our arctic outbreak which is expected mid to late week. We'll leave those gruesome details for later, but keep your eyes peeled as we get closer to the time!
Taking a look at the upper level animation above we see a broad upper ridge sitting over the coast. This will gradually be pushed eastward into the BC interior with an upper level trough digging west of Haida Gwaii approaching. By the end of the day the upper ridge is firmly over the interior, and an upper low has formed just north of Vancouver Island with trough extending south. The increased intensity of this low and trough is bringing intense precipitation rates to the Vancouver Island and South Coast ranges as it approaches. Through the day on Tuesday the upper trough continues to push into the interior. By later Tuesday only remnants of the upper trough are present over BC.
