A brief dry interlude
A ridge of high pressure centered over the BC interior will give mainly clear conditions over much of the region today except for some scattered flurries in the Columbia and Kootenay regions. Mainly cloudy but dry conditions will dominate most of the BC coast except for the North Coast where a frontal system pushing across the Gulf of Alaska will spread rain late in the day.
On Thursday morning a frontal system through Haida Gwaii will move eastward to lie through Vancouver Island in the afternoon. The front will spread rain to most coastal regions with some moisture moving across the central interior to give periods of snow. Scattered flurries will also develop in the afternoon over the Columbia regions.
The 500 mb animation depicted above shows an upper ridge just off the BC coast this morning and a deep trough over the prairies. The upper ridge will shift eastward to lie along the BC/Alberta border on Thursday morning as an upper trough approaches the BC coast. This trough will spread periods of rain to coastal sections before weakening and shifting eastward over the interior. On Friday an upper low centre will move over the South Coast accompanied by an intense surface low pressure system. Behind this upper low, a strong zonal flow offshore will gradually back to the southwest as an upper trough deepens far offshore.
