Backcountry riders in the Yukon now have access to regular avalanche forecasts from Avalanche Canada.
AvCan issued its first Yukon forecast on Monday, January 6, 2020, bringing this product back to the northern territory for the first time after an absence of several years.
The forecasts are made possible thanks to increased federal funding and $60,000 in funding from the Yukon government. This funding has allowed AvCan to hire a three-person field team that will collect weather, snowpack, and avalanche data to assist Revelstoke forecasters in producing forecasts for the region. They will also engage with winter backcountry recreationists in the field and through social media.
AvCan will continue its long-standing partnership with the Yukon Avalanche Association. The YAA will support the program by acting as a liaison between AvCan, the local government, and community, and assisting with outreach initiatives.
The Yukon region covers the popular White Pass and Wheaton Valley areas. These zones are popular with backcountry skiers, splitboarders, and snowmobilers from Whitehorse and other communities in the Yukon.
Forecasts will be issued every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the winter.
