Wintry Blast

As the headline of this blog hints at, we are indeed in the throws of a wintry blast. Mother nature just wanted to remind us that even though we are getting ever nearer to spring, it is still indeed still winter and snow, cold weather is still in the pipes!

Well entrenched arctic air is providing perfect pre-conditioning for a robust frontal system swinging through the province today. Northwest ranges have already been hit and will continue to see snow, but interior regions over the north will see it ramp up today and southern interior ranges will start to see some of that heavier snow later today.

Snow liquid ratios are very high, so even if by traditional measure of moisture it doesn't look like much, the snow will be fluffy and stack up quickly, with many areas seeing upwards of 30 to 40 cm of snowfall accumulation before all is said and done later Sunday.

Taking a look at the upper level animation we can see that a weak, and relatively flat upper ridge is over BC. However, as we progress through today we can see that the ridge moves off and makes room for a deepening upper trough off the coast of BC. The upper trough really begins to dig and deliver a lot of moisture initially to coastal ranges, and then spreads to interior ranges later in the day. By Sunday, the upper trough has lost its sharpness and definition, but is still overall "troughy" and unsettled.
