DATE, TIME AND LOCATION
Date/Time: 2010-02-14 15:30
Description: Bewes Creek / Crazy Creek area
Coordinates: 118 31.5 51 5.07 (Geographic (long-lat))
Mtn Range: Monashee Mountain Range Province: BC
GROUP INFORMATION
Activity: Snowmobiling
AVALANCHE INFORMATION
Number: 1 Size: Size class 2 Type: LS
Trigger: Ma
Dimension: 30m wide; ran for 100m; average slab depth of 50cm.
Failure Pl.: Old - SH/DF (2010-01-30)
Starting Zone: Location: Treeline at approx. 1920m.
Character: N; 40 degrees; Convex Roll(s).
On short steep slope above and south of a popular sledding area. The trigger ascended and turned below another sledder and cut the center of the minor gully which bisects two knobs. The snow broke in this area and caught both sledders on the steepest part.
Comment:
INVOLVEMENT INFORMATION
Number of people involved: 1 partially buried - breathing not impaired; 1 completely buried.
Number of people injured: 1 deceased.
WEATHER AND SNOWPACK INFORMATION
Weather: Slow build up of snow on a weak surface hoar layer.
Snowpack: The failure plane was a surface hoar layer buried 53 cm deep. A compression test failed the surface hoar layer on 13 taps with a pop fracture character.
